My Approach to Helping
As humans, we have many facets - intellectual, physical, spiritual, cultural, sexual, emotional and familial - that interact with each other in chaotic and often unpredictable ways to make up who we are. At various points, we get stuck, experience conflict or something terribly painful, and do not know how to create change, or deal with the pain and move on with our lives.

I believe that therapy is fundamentally about creating possibility.

In our quick-results culture, we can feel impatient, and that we should be able to figure out what to do on our own. We use the same intellectual and emotional tools that helped produce the pain to try to alleviate it, and that does not always work. We have judgements about not being able to solve things ourselves, or about others for not being able to solve things for us. We think it is a moral failing, rather than considering that some additional intellectual and emotional tools might be required to move through the maze we are in.

I relate to my clients as having the capacity to give shape to their lives, including giving shape to the cure for whatever ails them. From this perspective, I engage them in a loving and challenging process of talking together in ways that allow them to discover how they see and understand themselves and the world.

Therapy is a kind of philosophical activity, where we slow down, and take a look at how we see, an unraveling of the web of assumptions we have about ourselves, our loved ones, and our problems that prevent us from living life in creative and gratifying ways. What is therapeutic about that? In taking a look, in discovering how we see and think, we also discover that there are other ways to see and live life, and that we can create them. We can develop. We can create the emotional and intellectual tools we need to live our lives as we'd like.
