It’s not always easy to take that initial step to see a therapist. Most people put pressure on themselves to manage their struggles on their own or to just "get over it." Our families, friends, co-workers, and society in general often tend to reinforce these beliefs. The truth is that most people benefit from talking to a caring, non-judgmental person to sort things out. Our families and friends may be too close to us to not get overly involved or violate boundaries. They want you to feel better so they can feel better! This is understandable, since people close to us aren't looking at us from an objective stance. They may care about you, but they also may not know how to truly help. Our support systems are very important and useful. However, talking to someone with a trained ear, an open stance, and professional and ethical boundaries makes more sense. Especially when you are really trying to heal from past wounds and begin to make important changes in your life. Making an investment in yourself can make all the difference toward reaching your true and deserved potential.
