Dr. Gartner has been practicing psychotherapy and teaching psychiatrists at Johns Hopkins University Medical School for twenty years. His two areas of specialization are Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder.
Borderlines have problems with impulsivity, mood swings, unstable relationships, and self destructive behaviors including self injury. While most clinicians prefer not to see these difficult patients, Borderline Personality is treatable. Though the work is intensive, long term, and often rocky, it is also satisfying, helping to turn around dangerously chaotic lives.
Dr. Gartner's book, The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (a Little) Craziness and (a lot of) Success in America, named by the New York Times Sunday Magazine as one of the most innovative new ideas of 2005, has made him an internationally known expert in hypomania, a mildly manic temperament often found among creative driven achievers. When it includes periods of depression, it is classified as bipolar disorder, type II. Dr. Gartner treats people at all levels of the bipolar spectrum from classic manic depressive disorder to high functioning hypomanic CEOs--helping them to find stability without extinguising their creative flame.
