I mainly use rational emotive or narrative approaches to help people to see that there are things about the way they think about their problems that are unhelpful, and that produce emotional distress. I use practial ideas to help people to change their thinking, emotions and behaviours. I try to encourage people to be positive; to reframe their difficulties as challenges; to accept that "life is difficult"; to accept themselves and others, even when there are issues of "bad behaviour" involved; to be loving rather than hating, to be calm rather than angry, to be hopeful and optimistic rather than depressed and despondent. I combine a number of different approachs to fashion a unique response to each person with whom I work, as each person is totally unique. With couples, I teach improved communication strategies, and increased acceptance of their partner "as a person", even while working to change some of the partner's behaviours. In short, I use a form of "philosophical coaching" or "thinking skills training" to help people to help themselves with their problems of daily living.
More Info About My Practice
I relate to every person as a unique, 'mysterious' other. I try to develop a collaborative approach to problem solving, or identifying solutions. I am growing and changing all the time, and use influences from a broad range of disciplines. I consider that people, including my clients, are now, and always will be, a work in progress. I see my people I help as resourceful, and I help them to develop their own resources, instead of becoming dependent upon me.
