My Approach to Helping
Therapy begins with an assessment, not a structured interview but a narrative exploration of what brings you into treatment, and an attempt to understand the experiences that have contributed to the problem. Assessment is an ongoing part of a therapeutic process that may also involve, depending upon the situation, in-depth exploration, problem solving, developing coping skills, dealing with relationship issues and managing self-destructive behaviors.

For some, therapy is a process of self-discovery, a new beginning; for others it is a process of finding a resolution to a specific problem. My approach is based in developing a plan for you that meets your specific needs. I listen carefully to what you say, work with you to solve the problems you are confronting and help you find your way forward.

Whether you need to regain control of your life because of grief, trauma, addiction, self-esteem difficulties, depression, anxiety, divorce, or relationship issues, I can help you in rebuilding your life, and in finding hope and new directions.

Having a safe place to talk with someone can make all the difference in the world. For 35 years, providing a compassionate, insightful and private refuge from the world, a sanctuary for reflecting, resolving, and re-gearing has been the cornerstone of my approach.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

While in my practice I work with a wide range of psychotherapy issues, and am experienced in a diversity of issues I have special expertise in grief and trauma, as well as addictions, including drug alcohol and sexual addiction. I also have special expertise in helping persons who are effected by feelings of shame, embarrassment, self-consciousness, shyness, low self-esteem and related issues.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

The most important factor has to do with the fit between you and your therapist-- your feeling comfortable and, most of all, understood by your therapist. It is hard to know beforehand if you will be able to form good working relationship with your therapist, and to assess whether the person you choose to help you will really "get you". But, in reading these profiles of therapists, trying to get a feel for this may be the most important part of the process.
