Psychotherapy is not one thing. Just as medicine is broken into specialties, so too is psychotherapy. The type of therapy I provide helps people understand thier thoughts, feelings, and behavior by looking closely at how their present and past circumstances are influencing them.
One of the most important questions people ask me is how long therapy will take. In most instances I honestly don't know. The kind of therapy I do unfolds in such a way that makes it difficult to predict how long it will take. In some instances therapy is short, perhaps just a few weeks. In other instances, it can be quite long, perhaps a year or more. There are several factors that seem to determine how long therapy will take in my practice. Perhaps the most important of those factors is creating a sense of safety or comfort so that difficult subjects can be discussed. When safety is available, openness becomes possible and often speeds up the process. Of course, the seriousness of the issues also impact the length of therapy. The frequency of appointments also impacts how fast the therapy proceeds. I have found that when I schedule appointments longer than one week apart, therapy often slows down. Typically I meet with people once per week to try to keep some momentum going. When we both feel as if we've accomplished the client's goals, we know it's time to wind down therapy.
