I love hearing people's stories, how they have walked along their journey and where they want to go. It is an honor and a privilege to be allowed inside to help find solutions.
My heart sinks a little bit whenever I hear a new client tell me horror story about past therapy experiences. I am always amazed at how courageous clients are to try again. I ask at the beginning of each new session if they have ever been to therapy before. If the answer is yes, then my follow up question is, "What did you like about it and what did you not like about it." I do not want to repeat a bad experience. Therapy should be non-judgemental, safe and yet it is a place to work. Let's begin the work you want to do.
This is such complex question. Unless a client is in crisis or has a certian time limit, I generally see clients once a week or every other week. Therapy is a personal experience and every person who enters into the process goes at their own pace depending upon what they are undertaking. It is never my thought to keep a client in therapy a long time, I am not a psycho-analyist. I want to give people tools they can take with them and be able to handle whatever comes up in their life. Clients generally know when they feel they are ready and we work to transition to that place.
