My Approach to Helping
We all want to feel heard, that we matter, and that we're doing enough.

Sometimes, we develop ways of relating which support these feelings, and other times, we get stuck in old ways of being that prevent our inherent worth from shining.

Perhaps you've tried self-help books, gone to workshops, or talked with friends. But, none of that has worked because it takes active focus to change the things that matter to you, friends are biased, and it's easy to get distracted. (Studies show that if you choose more than one issue to change, your will decreases).

Creating time for yourself, in and of itself, is healing. Particularly, if you're the kind of person who gives to others or has trouble making time for yourself (being a parent, being a business owner, a giver, a therapist, a grad student, etc).

Having someone to check in with about your progress makes a huge difference. Research also suggests that positive connections lower our blood pressure, increase our ability to fight off colds, decrease depression and anxiety, increase our clarity and direction, and make it possible to create more positive relationships. If you come in, I can offer you the research citations to substantiate these claims, but if not, you can just take my word for it (smile).

So, the very act of coming to therapy is healing.

Hello! My name is Heather Schwartz. I'm an interactive psychologist with 10 years experience as an individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapist.

I'm interested in who you are, your strengths, your dreams and hopes, what gives your life meaning and inspiration. In other words, what allows you to feel whole.

My style is warm, engaged, enthusiastic, genuine, and optimistic. I view myself as an active collaborator.

Together, we can work together to increase your joy, clarity, and zest in life!

My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy

Short Answer: Empowerment. Long Answer: Supporting what works and accepting or finding ways to cope with what doesn't. This involves exploration of your potential, transformation through experimentation, and inspiration. I am a firm believer in the inherent goodness of people and in your inherent ability to make changes and live a satisfying, full life. Bring your knowledge of yourself and motivation, and I, in turn, offer optimism, an enthusiastic perspective, empathy, dedication, and expertise.
