Good Boundaries Free You: Boundary Development in Therapy

Presented by Sarri Gilman, LMFT on 02-03-2017 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Boundaries act as a compass or guidance system that is used to make every single professional and personal decision. Working as a mental health professional involves constant contact with people and requires effective boundary skills that some clinicians may not have developed. Boundary skills help prevent burnout, lower stress, and improve overall health.

In this two-hour continuing education web conference, Sarri Gilman, LMFT, breaks down the complicated topic of boundaries. She will share an approach for helping individuals create lasting boundary development. She will outline ways to help people in therapy pay attention to their own boundaries and their boundary life lessons, as well as self-care planning for the clinician.

Sarri will discuss the work a therapist must be willing to “sweat” through to become an authentic guide with boundary development. She will explain the process of boundary development that includes self-awareness, boundary awareness, emotional awareness, and extreme boundary challenges.

This introductory instructional level continuing education course is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Describe the four-step process that provides the framework for boundary development.
  2. Identify boundary stories and conflicts through seven patterns.
  3. Recognize boundary patterns and create a self-care plan to address boundary development.
  4. Utilize self-care planning to connect with boundary building.
  5. Discuss the connection between current research on stress, the brain, and boundary skills.
