My Approach to Helping

I have worked as a therapist with individuals, couples and families since 1977. People usually come to therapy because of some pattern of internal pain, and/or because of difficulties with their personal relationships, or in their every day lives. I work in a respectful, confidential, compassionate, and collaborative way. At the same time, I am professional, very direct and honest; while honoring your feelings and values. The therapeutic relationship is a critically important container from which we do the work. I also believe that clients need a therapsit who is a "real" person and who actively listens and responds to their concerns. The focus of therapy is to assist clients in understanding the nature of the problems that bring them to my office, as well as to clarify their goals and the path for change. The therapeutic process helps people to see beyond the limits that prevented satisfying change in the past: to recognize new possibilities and options for themselves and their relationships. We then focus on their current strengths, as well as developing new skills for dealing with their lives. At this point they are able to make different conscious choices, and to live those choices in a way that leads to a more meaningful and satisfying life.

EMDR [Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing], has been a particularly powerful tool that many clients have chosen to utilize as a way of speeding up the process of reaching their goals. We often will integrate EMDR into the therapy process, to help heal painful memories, and the meanings associated with those memories. EMDR can help to open new meanings, new ways of thinking, reacting, and feeling that lead to personal growth and healing. I would be glad to speak with you concerning any questions or concerns you may have. Feel free to call me at 734-9961661, or email me at kagang@ameritech.net Sincerely, Glenn Kagan
