I have a 6th sense when it comes to helping clients discern if they have depression with anxiety, or bi-polar disorder. I created a one page questionnaire that looks at degrees of impairment across what one thinks, feels, feels in his/her body, and how one behaves. I also discuss the challenges of getting medication just right, when called for. I provide support and guidance when a psychiatrist should be considered. I monitor via weekly sessions how medication is working. I also employ and teach a variety of interventions that clients can use during the week for self stabilization.
Coming to therapy means you are strong enough to recognize that your resources to date haven't fulfilled the results that you're looking for. Our culture and these times are very complex, and everyone needs a shoulder to lean on, an outside, objective, person to bounce ideas and feelings off of. Often clients need information or another point of view that heretofore hasn't been available to him/her. Often the client is the sensitive, caring, thoughtful person in a situation where s/he doesn't feel understood by others. Coming to therapy helps individuals be clear about their personal truths and values. There need not be any stigma in seeking to understand oneself better. A person who would stigmatize another for seeking a therapist likely has a mistaken idea of what therapy or seeking a counselor is about.
