My Approach to Helping

It can be a difficult step to go beyond the support of your friends and family and seek out help from a therapist. But getting assistance when you are struggling is a sign of strength, not weakness. Usually when someone seeks my assistance, it's because they are dissatisfied, confused, or hurting in some area of their life. They've tried what they know to resolve their concern, but still feel stuck and unsure about decisions they face or unclear about how to move forward. The expertise I have to offer you as a counselor is not to "show you the way" to proceed. But rather, it is to assist you with gaining the clarity and understanding needed to feel confident in your decisions and choices; and then help you to develop the insight, skills, and courage needed to move forward. The approach we use in your counseling will depend upon your strengths, personality style, and the ways you organize and understand ideas. We'll also consider your goals for counseling and the urgency of the issues you are facing. Then we can adjust the approach to use in our work together and create the best fit for you in order to get the most benefit for your time and expense.

Once you decide to use a counselor, there is still the question "Who do I choose?" Of course you want someone competent to help you with your particular concerns, but it is also important that you feel comfortable and compatible with your therapist. That is hard to know based on a website, brochure, or even a recommendation from a friend. So, I invite you to arrange for a no cost 30 minute introductory meeting with me. This will give you a chance to get acquainted with me before making a decision; and will also help us to determine if my skills, experience, and approach to therapy are a good fit to assist to you.
