The Myth of Normal

Presented by Gabor Maté, MD on 10-14-2016 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

For all our progress in understanding and treating mental illness, it continues to be a subject of misapprehension, prejudice, and stigmatization. The reason for that may be not its strangeness but its familiarity. Very few individuals or families are not touched by at least some aspects of mental dysfunction, some periods of the discouragement, disconnect, and/or anxiety that, on a deeper and more chronic level, characterize the mind states of people diagnosed with certain mental health conditions. And beyond individual experience or predisposition, many factors in our culture conduce to mental malfunction on a broad social scale.

During this two-hour continuing education web conference, Dr. Gabor Maté will explore the causes and "normality" of depression, anxiety, and addictions in our society.

This introductory instructional level web conference is designed to help clinicians:

  1. Explain the biopsychosocial nature of physical and mental illness.
  2. Recognize how early childhood coping mechanisms help young children endure stress but can become sources of pathology later in life.
  3. Describe how early experiences shape not only the mind but also the brain.
  4. Develop a deeper understanding of trauma and its impacts on psychology and physiology.
  5. Discuss how addiction, depression, anxiety, and other related conditions are often the consequences of early trauma.
