My Approach to Helping

My mission as a therapist is to provide counseling and support through a guided exploration that opens the path for growth, healing and resolution through the creation of visual art. The making of an image serves as a starting point for sharing the issues clients seek to explore and resolve. The techniques can be continued outside of the therapuetic session and continued between sessions. I like to begin sessions with the Open Studio process, which provides the opportunity for clients to experience an innovative therapeutic art-making session and benefit from the healing power of art. Through the use of expressive arts, I seek to help children and adults communicate their feelings, tell their stories and experience themselves as unique individuals. Open Art Therapy studio for Individuals Individual sessions 70 minutes. These sessions include an art making session and dialogue. Open Group Art Therapy studio 2 hour studio sessions offered on Sunday afternoons for clients wishing to work within a community of healing. Along with traditional talk therapies, art making can add a dimension to healing that can continue outside of sessions, and provide a visual record and a process to begin dialogues that may be challenging to discuss. I also believe in traditional 'talk' therapy and encourage clients to shift between the two techniques as the grow, and heal throughout their therapuetic journey.

More Info About My Practice

Art therapists believe that the arts have a healing ability and allow us to connect to our inner world. Through the art making process, we are able to externalize and share this world with others. Each painting, drawing, sculpture or collage has the ability to allow us to gain personal insight, unblock and move forward, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, personal growth and wellness, stimulate spiritual, mental and physical connectivity, channel anger and relieve depression, grieve, cope, reminisce and adapt. Art therapy has the ability to assist us in a deep introspective process, which may lead to new awareness and life changes. We see how art strengthens our self-esteem, provides an opportunity for positive feedback from the therapist and fellow group members, and allows one to re-experience themselves as a being with the capacity for profound personal transformation and growth. I offer a sliding-scale payment schedule.
