The majority of my patients are struggling with Depression, Bipolar Disorder or PTSD. I have worked with individuals struggling with Sexual Abuse Issues since the 1990's.I also work with a lot of individuals struggling with Chronic Illness (most are very depressed about the diversion their life has taken because of an illness, living with constant pain, and dealing with trying to work or have a family when they have a chronic illness). I have been trained and use a lot of creative therapies (journaling, sand tray work, art therapy, hypnosis, guided imagery) to help you "get out of your head" and into your emotions. My style is very gentle but I am very involved in the process. I am not the type of therapist that remains silent and occasionally asks, "how does that make you feel." I tend to listen, give feed back, and work outside of the box to do whatever it takes to help you to feel better.
Absolutely! I went through a divorce prior to going to graduate school. Then, mid way through graduate school I was diagnosed with Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. These disease were so severe that I was unable to work for several years. I struggled with being very depressed because I had a Ph.D. and was in bed watching HBO most of the time! I felt as if I was in a fish bowl...watching the rest of the world fly past while I was in bed, alone and in pain. Luckily, I found an amazing rheumatologist that has me on a new drug regime and I am able to work again. I have understood, up close and personal, the loss of a marriage, chronic pain, being a single parent, and struggling with depression. Unfortunately, at the time that I was disabled, I couldn't find a therapist that really understood what that was like. They could empathize but they didn't really get it. Many of my chronic illness patients love that I really understand their physical pain. My depressed patients say they have a sense that I really "get them." I'm not saying that you have to have been through a bad marriage to be a good marriage therapist, but sometimes it is nice to know that your therapist has walked in your shoes. It creates an immediate bond. I also have found that the struggles that I have been through have made me more empathic and a much better therapist. I have walked through fire and come out unburned. Which means that YOU can do that as well. Take my hand, and we can walk this journey together.
