I specialize in relationships and codependency and have many years experience working in this area. I have seen people who get overly attached to other people, and other people's opinions of them, and others who are so isolated that they are terrified to connect with an intimate partner. Codependency involves this kind of over attachment and need for others to do life on our terms instead of being able to work together with another person to create relationship. It involves controlling behavior and fear of the unknown. You may be in relationship with someone who is abusing alcohol or drugs, or a workaholic or similar addiction pattern. If so, you will find yourself unhappy and scared of how to fix the relationship. hoping you will find the key somehow, even though you have tried all logical ways. If you do, I can help you come to see who you are and what you need to feel good about your life. I can help you find a new way of dealing with your world and feel happier. Relationships take two people to succeed. However, even if your partner is not motivated to change or attend therapy, I will show you how to focus on your life and interact with your partner in different ways. This will help you use your inner strength to act on your behalf, which ironically can help your relationship as well. I will help you set your needed boundaries and find the strength to move ahead in this process, one step at a time.
I think we as unique individuals do not learn enough about ourselves as we grow and mature. Through relationships and interactions every day, we learn to enjoy and find meaning in life. Our culture does not support and promote growth and change so psychotherapy has grown from that need to understand ourselves and each other. When we reach a place in our lives where the tools we already know no longer work well, we need some help in finding out how to handle our next steps. I see psychotherapy as a resource where we can educate ourselves about how to cope better with life's challenges. When we take the step of asking for some help with our lives, we are already beginning to change. Our input and actions are essential parts of this process and any effective course of therapy requires that we actively advocate for ourselves by trying new behaviors and interactions with others. Thus, the old adage, "You get back what you put into (a process)" really applies to therapy. In addition, we must stay present with what is happening to us, in us, and around us to handle the next challenge as life dictates. When we stay present, we find new parts of ourselves and ways to cope which surprise us and add new energy to live life fully on its terms, beyond our fears and struggles. With this new awareness, your life becomes more joyful and engaged with what comes up. You can make new decisions with a healthy attitude of acceptance and peace.
