About Dr. Dan Siegel:

Siegel Dr. Daniel J. Siegel received his medical degree from Harvard University and performed his postgraduate medical education at UCLA with training in pediatrics and child, adolescent and adult psychiatry. He also served as a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health UCLA, studying family interactions with a special focus on how attachment experiences shape emotions, behavior, narrative, and autobiographical memory.

 

Dr. Daniel J. He also served as a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health UCLA, studying family interactions with a special focus on how attachment experiences shape emotions, behavior, narrative, and autobiographical memory.

 

Currently, Dr. Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he is also the Co-Director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA and on the faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development. As a prominent educator, he has been honored as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and has received several other honorary fellowships. Siegel also serves as the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute, an educational organization focused on enhancing the development of mindsight in individuals, families, and communities through examination of the interface of human relationships and basic biological processes.

 

Dr. Siegel has published a substantial body of work for the professional audience. He is the co-editor of a handbook of psychiatry and the author of an extensive collection of articles and chapters. He is also the author of the internationally renowned text, The Developing Mind: Toward a Neurobiology of Interpersonal Experience (Guilford, 1999). This important work introduces the concept of interpersonal neurobiology and has been of interest to and utilized by numerous organizations, including the U.S. Department of Justice, The Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family, Microsoft and Google, early intervention programs and a variety of clinical and research departments worldwide. He has been invited to speak for the King of Thailand, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Pope John Paul II.

 

Dr. Siegel is the Founding Editor for the Norton Professional Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology, which includes an additional 20+ textbooks. His book Parenting from the Inside Out: How a Deeper Self-Understanding Can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive (Tarcher/Penguin, 2003), co-authored with Mary Hartzell, M.Ed., examines the application of this relatively recently developed understanding of the mind, the brain, and human relationships. His professional book, The Mindful Brain: Reflection and Attunement in the Cultivation of Well-Being (Norton, 2007), discusses the nature of mindful awareness as a method that utilizes the social circuitry of the brain as it supports mental, relational, and physical health. His book Mindsight: The New Science of Personal Transformation provides general audiences a comprehensive exploration of the ability of the mind to integrate the brain and enhance well-being. His most recent text for professionals, The Mindful Therapist, focuses on the application of these concepts for the clinician's own development of mindsight and neural integration.

 

Dr. Siegel's unique ability to explain complex concepts in a lucid, comprehensive, and engaging manner has made him a popular speaker requested by local, national and international organizations where he lectures to groups of educators, public administrators, policy-makers, parents, clergy, healthcare providers, and neuroscientists. He lives in southern California with his family.
