Therapy for Depression
October 8th, 2008 |Depression - Update to Common Therapy Issues
Depression is a state that affects mind, emotion and body, creating a dysphoric mood, lethargy or anxiety in the body, and thoughts of hopelessness, helplessness and, in a significant number of cases, suicidal ideation. Depression should not be confused with normal grief in the aftermath of a major loss, although extended grief may lead to true depression. Depression that is mild and chronic, with fewer symptoms, is known as dysthymia. Depression may present differently based on age or cultural factors. Adolescents tend to show an irritable and agitated depression; older adults may or may not be irritable; certain cultural groups may mask their feeling to varying degrees; women are known to be more likely to admit to depression than men. Depression is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy. Read More here: therapy for depression

does depression make a person forget about things? My mom lives in California while I am in Boston. She is a widow and is basically an introvert by nature. She suffers from arthritis which makes her mostly home bound. I find her forgetting so many things and incoherent at times. She is very depressed and doesnt want to move to where I live or to a home. I dont know what to do to improver her mood and memory.

There was a time in my life that I suffered from a severe depressive episode and I tell you all I was able to do until I got treatment was to retire to the bed. There were days when I did not even get out of bed. I could not eat, and really could not function at all. I did eventually get the treatment and medications that I needed to get well, and hopefully if I see it coming on again I will know the signs this time and will better be able to combat it.

Does anyone have any input about how to confront someone you may feel is depressed and needs help but that person just does not see things in that way? They may be offended by the suggestion?

Depression can be such a debilitating illness. There are many who suffer with this everyday and hopefully the things we learn here through our reading and communicating with one another will leave all of us much better prepared to help others who may be facing these things. I have seen depression ruin lives and that is so sad because there are some very effective treatments out there to help people through it.
