I didn't realize that survivor's guilt wasn't limited to those who did survive something tragic that someone else did not survive. Now, I have a whole new perspective on this issue. It certainly makes me think and I will certainly keep it in mind when working with my clients. I think this sort of understanding will help my clients understand why they are engaging in certain destructive behaviors.

I think I know what Heidi means. When something good happens to me, I often think, "Why me?" But, when something bad happens, I often think, "Why not me?" It seems that life is so full of pain. Why should I have happiness when others have pain? I feel that this blog really helped me see the ramifications of this sort of thinking. It's not just me it affects, which I certainly didn't see before. So, thank you for bringing this important line of thinking to our attention.

I am wondering about something. Is survivor guilt the same as "waiting for the other shoe to fall?" I often find myself waiting for something bad to happen. I have a wonderful family and I feel like I should just sit by the phone and wait for the call saying something unthinkable has happened. Is this sort of thing like survivor guilt?

I found this blog entry to be very helpful. I always wondered why I never felt like I deserved the many blessings I have. Why should I have so much when others have so little? If I am enjoying these things, then I am, in a way, not valuing people who are not as blessed. It certainly is a vicious cycle. Now, I can see how that cycle affects other people, especially my children.
