I have found that my clients do extremely well with this type of therapy. It often takes longer than other sorts of models, but it is always worth the time and effort. I have found that when a client and I finish this work, we don't usually see each other again. This is of course a little sad b/c I always enjoy meeting with my clients. But, it is so very gratifying which is why I usually try this model before all others.

Is this sort of therapy taught in course work that a therapist generally goes through in college? Or, is this a specialized type of therapy that requires its own sort of certification. Is this therapy becoming more main stream than it has in the past?

Yes, IFS therapy does give recognition and even appreciation to mental health disorders developed over time. These disorders are even thanked and told that they have served the person well. This line of thinking is radically different from traditional models that often try to fight disorders and get rid of them and see them as all evil.

I am very intrigued by this type of therapy. I really appreciate how the model gives a purpose of psychological maladaptions such as depression, eating disorders, etc. Rather than seeing them as something unwanted, they are seen as something that has served a clear purpose for the client.
