I suggest that you decide what you want out of therapy and focus on that in the beginning. Are you looking for a safe place to discuss private and sometimes painful issues? Are you looking for a professional that can educate you on a particular issue? Are you looking for an impartial observer who can help resolve a conflict? Are you looking a professional with some expertise in a particular area? Do you want to resolve a particular bad habit or obstacle in your life? Or, do you want to delve into your own psyche and engage in long-term self-examination? Once you know what you want out of therapy, it will be much easier to find the right therapist for you. This advice is good for people who are seeking therapy on their own or who might be in therapy because they've been ordered to go.
The method I use focuses more on the strengths and competencies of the client rather than their weaknesses and deficiencies. As we discuss painful feelings, we will be talking about the things that you are already doing to deal with those that is working. We will talk about areas in your life that are going well that can be used to help in areas that are not. My job as a therapist is to help you see your own strengths and help you find your own solutions.
My first career was in biology, so this is a question I have thought about a lot. First, genetics never dictates exactly how things will turn out. Genetics typically just gives us a range in which we will lay. For instance, Michael Jordan has the genes to be a great basketball player. But those genes only gave him the opportunity to be a great basketball player. If he had poor nutrition, never exercised, and never practiced playing basketball, then he would not be the athlete he is known for. Just because your parents, grandparents, or uncle twice removed on your mother's side struggled with a particular issue doesn't mean that you will as well. Simply put, you are not your genes, you are not your biochemistry, your are not your family, you are not your education, you are not your bank account, you are not your depression, and you are not your trauma. You are much more than all of that.
