My Approach to Helping
My approach to counseling is positive and affirming. As you identify problems, together we seek solutions that work for your unique personality and temperament. Your perspective and values are of the utmost importance and our ability to form a significant working relationship is key to the change you desire. Your results might range from behavioral change to seeing the problem from a new perspective. Either way, our mutual goals will include you living a better, more satisfying life.

Whether you seek brief counseling to help you through a crisis or ongoing support during major life transitions I bring a lifetime of experience into my work with you. You will find my approach active, direct, and practical.

My work is largely with teens, adults, couples, and families. I am trained in play therapy, which helps younger children understand and integrate life experiences. I am especially passionate about working with adoptive families, including trans-racial, LGBT, and families with both biological and adopted children.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Choosing a therapist is a little like choosing a friend. Not everyone you meet becomes a friend and not every therapist is right for you. When choosing a therapist, take a moment to quiet your mind and ask yourself what qualities you seek in your therapist. Do you sense that gender is important? Is the age of the therapist significant for you? Are you looking for someone who will be mindful of your sexual, ethnic, cultural or religious orientation? Do you seek a particular theoretical perspective? Once you meet with a therapist, ask yourself, is this someone I feel comfortable with? Do I have a sense I can trust this person with my inmost thoughts and feelings? Is it safe to be myself in this relationship? Be sure to discuss anything that comes up for you with the therapist.
