My Approach to Helping
Carmel Sheridan is a professionally qualified Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Supervisor based in Galway with a First Class Honours Masters degree in Psychology from NUIG and a Diploma in Counselling. She is an accredited member of the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy. IAHIP is a professional body with a strict code of ethics and a complaints procedure. This ensures the highest standard of professional practice. Carmel is the author of two books on dementia care. She is also an approved Couples Counsellor with Relationships Ireland which is the leading non-denominational couple counselling agency in Ireland.

Counselling can help with issues such as depression, low self-esteem, bereavement, addictions, relationship difficulties, panic attacks, abuse, life transitions, divorce or any problems that cause stress.

Carmel offers a warm, respectful and confidential relationship in a safe, professional setting. Within this space, people can explore their anxieties and embark on the journey towards self-awareness. She draws from different therapeutic approaches including cognitive behavioural, person centered and psychodynamic, and uses whichever is most suitable.

More Info About My Practice
Group sessions are also available and these are designed to transform your relationship to stress. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are both 8-week groups focused on transforming your relationship to stress, improving coping, and enhancing your enjoyment of life.

These innovative programmes help you cultivate mental, physical and psychological resilience and a greater sense of ease and effectiveness in life. The courses are practical, inspiring and transformative for those wanting to reduce job, family or health-related stress, including serious conditions.

Some of the benefits reported are:
-an increased ability to relax
-a greater energy and enthusiasm for life
-an improved capability to deal with stressful situations
-a lasting decrease in both physical and psychological
symptoms
-a significant reduction of pain and an improved ability to
cope with pain

The course is based on a program originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues, at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, USA, for hospital outpatients. It also draws on Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy research (Segal et al., 2002) which has grown out of Kabat-Zinn's work.

Groups run regularly in Galway city and Sligo and consist of eight weeks of 2 ½ hour-3 hour sessions with one full day retreat. Sessions are highly participatory and practical.
