My Approach to Helping
I look forward to working with you and offering Art Therapy that can help almost anyone feel calm and content. Drawing a fresh perspective fosters change; healthy solutions are sometimes close at hand. I've been specializing in working with kids, teens, and parents for the past 15 years. Having worked in a variety of intensive settings, including 2 years at a juvenile hall, I am confident I can help most families through whatever issue they bring forward.
Basically, we all have our "quirks": Those things about us that make us who we are and sometimes make us challenging to live with. Unfortunately, when our lives contain high levels of chronic or cumulative stress those quirks can turn into disorders. The "organized" person becomes Obsessive/Compulsive and the "irritable" teen becomes Oppositional-Defiant. Our hope is that by reducing the stress, we can reduce those disorders back down to quirks. Then we can refocus on finding out how our quirk is really our gift to the world.
Exciting update: I am now a Certified Simplicity Parenting Group Leader and I look forward to adding Simplicity Parenting classes and private consultations to my practice.
More Info About My Practice
My office in Auburn's Sierra Sunrise Building has stunning canyon and mountain views that help make the private space feel inspirational and creative. Many of my clients comment that they'd "relax here all day." Kids generally love coming to my place: not only are there hundreds of "cool" figures on my sand tray shelves, but I really like engaging with little people. Even if people can't quite reduce all the stress in their lives, at least my clients know that for one hour a week they get to come to special place that is just for them.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
Undoubtedly, the best moments in my day are when I have successfully created a space for someone to express themselves through art or sand play. Getting to guide and witness someone's creative process is truly and honor. The icing on the cake is when the client gains fresh perspective and insight that leads them to make a healthy change in their relationships.
Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist
Finding a feeling of trustworthy connection. Sometimes therapy begins with a referral from a trusted friend or family member, but more often it begins from a web page or insurance provider list. Since both of these later sources are pretty "out of the blue", I offer all perspective clients a FREE phone consultation, so that we can begin to build a more real and personal connection. We both need a chance to see if we should work together.
