No matter which modality I am using, I always adhere to the basics of Somatic Experiencing, which are to follow the lead of the person in front of me and to remember the power of small, titrated steps toward healing. Working with trauma, accumulated stress and anxiety should not be overwhelming or retraumatizing. The first step is to stabilize and build your resources - then we let those resources grow and the difficult symptoms diminish. It is not always necessary to relive or even retell specific events. Our work is to restore your nervous system to increase goodness. Trauma, stress and anxiety can come from a variety of sources, including surgeries, accidents and falls. Physical stress can tell your brain something is wrong, and sometimes your brain will come up with a reason to fit the bill. What if we could work with the symptoms in the body directly and see what happens to the rest? That is Somatic Experiencing.
