As the financial and emotional costs of depression and other mental health concerns become more prominent throughout the United States and around the world, the understanding of why people may not seek treatment, or may receive inadequate services, is becoming more important as well. A recent discussion in the Wall Street Journal looks at two studies focusing on startling statistics for those with mental health difficulties. One study notes that only half of those affected receive care, and a fourth receive care considered as being on par with modern standards. The second study shows that the prescription of two-–or even three–psychiatric medications in tandem has risen substantially as a type of treatment, sometimes in defiance of industry regulations.

There is a lack of knowledge in people regarding menatl health issues in general. If you talk of a physical health issue, people know it pretty well, but talk of a mental health issue and chances are that people will not know much… there need to be massive campaigns to raise awareness on the issue and it needs support from the authorities as well.

How crazy is it that the wealthiest country on the globe can still have health care issues like these? People are not getting the basic care that they need because of a lack of money. yet there are people out there still driving high priced Hummers and cars like that just because they can? Look at the streets people and you will see a whole other world different from what may be your own. Health care is great if you have it and can afford to keep it, but for the rest of us who are scraping by paycheck to paycheck it can be a nightmare. I am ashamed that so many people are falling through the cracks- but for the grace of God I could do the same thing today or perhaps next week but that is still a possibility. We have to make some changes to live up the standards of what we expect and deserve and what the rest of the world has already figured out when it comes to taking care of their own.

You are very true,Stasia. It is indeed very painful to see money and being splurged on various other things and yet people suffering to get ddexent healthcare.Although we cannot ask the havs to part with their wealth for the healthcare of the hav-nots,atleast the government and federal agencies can keep a check on such things, like not spending excessively on unrequired things and introducing bills that can proivde quality healthcare that is truly affordable to all.
