With persistent stigmatization over mental health services as well as the individuals who seek treatment, society can put a lot of undue pressure on those who experience mental health concerns. Combating this trend, a group of major athletes including Frank Bruno, Tony Adams, and Marcus Trecothick have joined the Time to Change campaign for spreading awareness about the issue and helping the public understand that mental health concerns can affect anyone –even sports celebrities. The athletes have shared their own experiences with mental health as part of Time to Change’s advocacy efforts surrounding Mental Health Awareness Week.

I have to agree that there is a lot of stigma attached to mental health problems, some people even go to the extend of calling anybody with a mental health problem a ‘psycho’ or other uncalled for words…

A lot of people have stigma regarding mental health issues. They think they just cannot get any of these problems themselves and even treat those with issue as if they are some kind of sinners… This kind of behavior is totally uncalled for and more education regarding mental health problems should be encouraged through programs like these.

This is a good move, considering the fact that a lot of people are influenced by their idols and icons, and especially so by sporting icons… more and more such ventures need to be crafted out and this is bound to make life easier for people with mental health issues.

Great to hear news like this. These athletes are role models for kids and adults and when they find the courage to speak out about the wrongs that are often perpetuated against those who struggle with mental illness it shines some much needed light on the issue and will hopefully get others on the bandwagon in leading the fight to stop these kinds of actions. People look up to those in the spotlight and their voice can make a big difference in the ways that things are done and how quickly changes are implemented.

A good lesson to all the celebrities to come forward and do something for the society and those that are not as advantaged as most of us. Others too should follow suit and do whatever they can to help the disadvantaged.
