School Nurses Seeing More Kids as a Result of Bullying
April 28th, 2011
Eric Vernberg of the University of Kansas, and colleagues conducted a study that showed that bullies and their victims were more apt to visit the school nurse even when they presented no outward injuries. According to the results, both the children who were bullied, and the bullies themselves, had increased psychological stress that manifested itself through physical symptoms. Dr. Tom Tarshis, the medical director of the Bay Area Children’s Association in Cupertino, California, pointed out that “a lot of bullies have the same mental health problems as the victims do.” He urged schools to become more aggressive in the intervention tactics they use with regard to this national problem.

When is all of this nonsense going to end? School should feel safe, and here are all of these kids now having to seek the help of nurses and counselors because there are other kids that they go to school with who have no sense of right from wrong. I am getting so angry that this is continuing and nothing real is being done to stop it. How many deaths is it going to take before we sit up and take real notice of the issues that we are facing here?
well it has been proved in many studies-bullies themselves suffer from mental health problems just like the victims do.so I oftn wonder why they do bully when they suffer from it too!sometimes I feel its more of an uncontrollable thing that they do without being fully aware of it.
I may be wrong but there is no harm in doing a study on something like this.or has there already been one?would love to hear from the others here.
Sorry but I have little sympathy for the bullies. I know they are kids but maybe what they need is a firm hand across the bottom every now and then!
it’s surprising that bullying is on the rise again.it seemed to have gone on the decline for the past decade or so.to know that this hydra is growing another head again is depressing and shows that the methods followed thus far are inadequate.
@Amanda- Bullying is child abuse. There, I said it. It’s child abuse, it’s a crime, and bullies need to be treated like criminals. If a bully punches a kid and draws blood, they need to make the whole school stand outside and watch the thug get taken to a police car while handcuffed.
@ My great-auntie always says “Bring back the birch. Anyone who got the birch was never bad again.” I’m inclined to agree. Let’s use that on those who think it’s okay to pick on their peers and drill it into them that it’s wrong. Words obviously don’t help. Many bullies have several prior victims they have already got into trouble over. They get caught, get slapped on the wrist and go right back to doing it again. The time for talk is over.
Bullies have NO mental problems. They are mean kids, no more, no less. Lock them up and throw away the key. I sure as heck don’t want them in my neighborhood ten or twenty years from now. As a taxpayer, I like to know that my money is spent on keeping my children protected from the likes of them.
@Anthony, I beg to differ. Of course bullies have mental problems! A well balanced person doesn’t feel the need to behave as they do. Locking them up without giving them access to proper therapy solves nothing. When they are released all they are is bigger and older, not wiser. Use commonsense, man.
@Jeanette: Actually, research suggests that bullying is a cycle. The victim who is picked on and is ignored when they go for help develops feelings of anger and aggression. These victims are often the ones that bring a gun to school to shoot their harassers dead. A recent school shooter stated it was bullying that drove him to it. It was reported about three weeks ago in the news. The bullied become the aggressors.
