Mental health care for schizophrenia and similar psychological concerns has been vastly improved over the past few decades, though many questions about how to best improve the quality of life of these clients are still being explored. Recently, a research team from Dartmouth University in conjunction with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs conducted a review of the Large Health Survey of Veteran Enrollees in order to determine rates of mortality through heart disease as influenced by the presence of schizophrenia. The review found that those exhibiting symptoms of the mental health issue and some other challenging concerns were twenty five to forty percent more likely to succumb to heart disease. The review shows a clear need for greater study as well as more attentive and preventive care for some mental health clients to ensure they lead healthy lifestyles.

Thats a high percentage of mortality! I think it is better if past cases of the same nature are studied and analysed to see if there is any other connecting link. Maybe there was something in common in people who actually succumbed to it…?
it may be obvious, but i’ll say it anyway-there must be a link between the two, and finding it should be the utmost priority of those that are dealing with trying to find solutions to the disorder… it may help us in treating both the disorder at one go, benefitting tens of thousands of people who suffer from this harrowing disorder and whose numbers are growing everyday!
People affected by this disorder undergo a lot of mental agony and heart-ache and depression, which in turn affects the heart. This might have a clue to the problem.
Wonder if there are other health connections that have not been made here. I mean do you think that there is some real physical link that could cause greater numbers of heart disease or do you think that it is the mental stress that schizophrenia patiemts have to endure that could cause them to be more likely to suffer from a heart condition?
