A recent article in The New York Times covered issues in the realm of types of mental health treatment, ranging from psychotherapy to psychiatric drugs and beyond, noting that different types of care may be more appropriate for different people and their respective concerns. Responses to the article have been rapidly produced, with many professionals debating the merits of some types of care and others discussing problems in establishing which types of mental health disciplines are best suited to certain client concerns. As support for psychotherapy becomes stronger, the discussion is likely to spread public enthusiasm for meaningful care.

Have seen a lot of postings here lately alluding to the huge amount of debate that there seems to be in the mental health field these days. Whats up? Why can’t the docs come to a consensus about the bets types of treatment? Better yet, why not let them try what seems to be workign for their patients and go from there? We all know that different things are going to work for different patients- no two treatments are going to be alike, nor should they be. I just think that sometimes people get a little too closed minded and think that there is only one right way when obviously that is never the case. Try some different things, see what works for the individual, and then everyone can be happy!

It is good that things like these are being discussed and debated. Such discussions let many people know about the procedures employed and will help them understand the problems of the patients better, as this includes people around them…

Debate can be a good thing when done in a constructive manner. But when big heads are just talking just to hear themselves talk, then there is an issue. But as long as it can lead to something useful then I am all for it.

While there will always be some people who think that “their way is the only way”, debate can be a great way to encourage others to see different points of view as well as even learn something new. It’s important in any profession to keep an open mind. To be close minded and stuck in a rut only doing things certain ways does not benefit or serve the needs of your clients. It is to the benefit of the clients that practitioners always explore what will work best – whether it is “their way” or not.

My theory has always been that if you find something that works, then take it and run with it! Let the others hash it out for themselves, but if it feels right to you than the bottom line is that it probably is.
