Call Made for Improving, Believing in Rehabilitation of Youth
March 10th, 2010
In the UK, the rehabilitation of young people convicted of various crimes has recently become a hot topic in the wake of news that one of the country’s most well-known child offenders has been recalled to state custody after being released. The BBC has published an appeal to those doubting the efficacy of rehabilitation efforts, nothing that the expectation of a complete and absolute change in behaviors is an unreasonable measure of progress, whereas gradual improvements in performance can be taken as signs that rehabilitation is working. As the UK considers potential changes to its justice and detention systems, professionals around the world involved with criminal psychology and clinical practice within state settings are bound to add their voices to the discussion.

When the failure of these youth is what you believe in then that is what you get. You have to raise your expectations, believe in them so that they can go out and believe in themselves.
Rehabilitation is not magic and the results are not uniform across all the people…while it may take very little time to see results in one person,it may take a very long time in another person, even though the same technique is used. There are also a lot of other factors if the rehabilitation to work.
I agree, we need to raise our own expectations and begin to instil core values back into society.
It’s the old self fulfilling prophecy at work. If you don’t believe in someone and teach them in turn to not to believe in theselves then they won’t. Our youth are what will carry us into the next generation. Why not try to do a better job to get them prepared and to work hard on making them strong enough to carry the future. Kids CAN be rehabbed, but it takes work on the part of society as a whole to make that happen. They can’t be thrown to the wolves and be expected to go it alone.
