Journal Hosts Debate on Video Games, Aggressive Behavior

The concern that exposure to violent video games may contribute to aggressive behavior is certainly nothing new, but research into the inquiry has recently produced a slew of debate amidst attempts to obtain a definitive correlation. In the journal Psychological Bulletin, a study has just been published suggesting that proof of the relationship between on-screen violence and behavior has been produced, though the journal also features a number of rebuttals-–as well as support pieces. Whether the community will be able to draw useful meaning from the study and its contenders is as yet unclear, though the interest in this classic psychological issue is strong.

I am 20 years old and I do agree with this report by my personal experience…whenever I have played games, especially the ones that involve racing, I tend to be more aggressive than usual behind the wheel. This usually has my parents worried because I play GTA titles too ;)
Jokes apart,I really think this can affect a person, but let us not generalize…what influences me if I have gamed for a long period of time may influence someone else quicker and may not influence some others altogether.

I am so interested in this subject. My brother was a great kid until he became a gamer and the more he played those violent games the more aggressive he became with me and everyone else that he perceived to be weaker than him physically. No one else could match him in the game so he began to think that this was true in real life as we.. I am telling you that too much time with the games for him really screwed up the head. I would never let my young boys play these games because they turn you into something that you weren’t before, and not in a very good way. There should be more than a ratings system on these games- they should just not be sold.

All movies and TV content is rated…even video games are rated…if people find no harm in movies and V shows depicting violence, why are they crying foul just because the same is shown in video games? At least it does not show real human in violence…!

It is clearly a feeling of a ‘new’ medium invading the lives of youngsters who the debaters think are hooked on to. There is nothing to be apprehensive about video games.

maybe the video games just bring out what was always lurking beneath the surface?

Video games are having a lot of bad influence on the younger generation.

Right from the language used to the attitude of the characters and the sole aim to destroy and capture things is very immoral, according to me.

I agree with Richard. It kind of goes back to the old adage about if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all. Maybe for the video game companies it should be if you do not have anything worthwhile to add to society then you should not put the product out there. I know I know that seems like censorship, but maybe that means we should censor ourselves more on the things that we buy and then they would sit up and pay attention more to the things we really want to see.
