Mental Health Insurance Denied Because of Happy Pictures of Depression Client

A GoodTherapy.org News Headline

Securing financial assistance for mental health service is a challenge faced by many in need of medication or long-term care, but most people expect their insurers to treat their mental health needs with respect and reason. Recently, a Canadian woman learned that her insurance agency might not have such values at heart, after her sick leave benefits used for a bout of depression were revoked due to pictures on her Facebook page which suggested she was enjoying herself. The pictures, taken at a Chippendales, at the beach, and at a birthday party, depict a smiling woman, who notes that she took time to be more social and take a holiday at the suggestion of her psychiatrist. The woman and her insurer will take the issue to court December 8th in a case that is sure to hold the attention of the mental health insurance industry.

Just one more reason to A) be careful of what you put on your facebook page and B) curse insurance

I read about this in the newspaper and just think it is really ridiculous to deny the woman in question of insurance just because she was ‘enjoying’ herself. At this rate, in the near future, we might have an insurance company telling us not to smile because we claimed insurance due to depression.
