Improving Access to Therapeutic Care Shows Significant Client Improvements
November 11th, 2009
The quality of psychological care is often a point of hot contention, and has created a global conversation about what constitutes good therapy and how it can be developed and improved in order to meet the needs of clients. Sometimes, however, simply obtaining access to care serves as the major point of difficulty for those in need of mental health treatment. In an effort to accommodate a greater number of UK citizens, the British Psychological Society has released information on a program focused on providing therapy access to those in need. Called the “Improving Access to Therapeutic Care” program, the mental health treatment service has shown to be significantly beneficial for many suffering from depression and anxiety, and the positive results of a clinical study on the program will help create a greater scope for such efforts in the future.

There are so many places and remote areas where the very access to health services in general is difficult, and more so for mental health services.
The UK isn’t remote. It’s made up of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Doncaster is not exactly a tiny village either. The problem is not location. It’s the cost to the National Health Service to offer therapy like cognitive behavioural therapy as standard. Most GP’s will just toss you a pack of anti-depressants and tell you to come back in two months time to see if you feel better. Cheaper? Yes. Effective? Doubtful. The ones that got into that program are very lucky and I hope it gets expanded one hundredfold.
How wonderful to read the good news about the plans and the success rate! Every medical center should follow in their footsteps. I’d wager that beats how well the medications alone do by comparison.
Most people agree to the fact that quality is more important than quality but think about this – if there is no quantity, then in what are we going to have quality? same thing holds good for this discussion. Although upgradation of services is necessary, setting up of facilities in places where it is presently inadequate is equally if not more important.
The easier the availability to health services, the better it is for the general populace. It gives them a sense of security in case of an emergency or should they require a health service. Once the availability is good, confidence levels are high and more importantly, treatment can be given out in major cases.
