Forum: Internal Family Systems Therapy

January 18th, 2008  |

Dear Members and Visitors to GoodTherapy.org,
Today we were pleased to present the first teleconference in the GoodTherapy.org Winter Teleconference Series: An introduction to the Internal Family Systems model (IFS) of Psychotherapy presented by Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D., the developer of the IFS model. Thanks to Richard who volunteered his time to present to GoodTherapy.org members this fascinating and beautiful approach to helping people heal.

To support those of you who attended today’s teleconference and who may have more questions or would enjoy having a forum to discuss the IFS model with others, we created this blog entry to serve as a forum where you can post your questions, leave comments, and engage in a dialogue about it. I hope all people will feel welcome, whether you attended the conference or not, to join us in the discussion. Having trained in the IFS model myself and being intimately familiar with it both inside and out, it will be pleasure to monitor the comments and answer as many questions as I can. I also welcome other IFS trained practitioners to join me in answering questions and taking part in the dialogue.

To view the comment or make your own, simply scroll to the bottom of this particular article and click on the “Comments” link.

For more information about the IFS model and their training programs, please visit the Center for Self-Leadership. For a quick overview of the IFS model you can go to our list of psychotherapy & counseling models and click on the link for Internal Family Systems Therapy.

Enjoy,

Noah :)

This was a great overview of IFS. I wish we could have started by ringing the bell and going inside. Just a quick comment about no “Bad” parts. I am learning more and more professionally and personally that those “Bad” parts tend to have very good intentions. They are sometimes like the school bully who steals your lunch money to buy diapers for his baby sister. One question is how to work with those extreme parts that have caused physical and sexual violence which the client has identified as “this is just who I am.” As well as those who have been victimized by someone’s “Bad” parts

18th World Family Therapy Congress (March 17-20, 2010)

The World Family Therapy Congress has a rich history of bringing together the greatest clinicians from the field, and in Buenos Aires we will continue this worthy tradition. In addition to showcasing the preeminent thinkers and scholars in family therapy, we will also consider the crucial role that family therapy plays in process of coexistence, healing, and reconciliation as it relates to trauma, violence, abuse, and suffering throughout the world.
The World Family Therapy Congress (IFTA) is designed for family therapists, practitioners, etc. It is an examination of the role of family therapy as it plays in the transformation of families throughout the world. There is an emphasis on examining the process of coexistence, healing, and reconciliation as it relates to trauma, violence, abuse, and suffering throughout the world.
The organization behind this congress is International Family therapy Association whose mission statement notes their desire to promote, strengthen and improve the quality of family therapy, the quality of relationships within families and to promote well-being and peace within our world.

The World Family Therapy Congress provides magnificent opportunities for face-to-face sharing of ideas, accelerated learning, and networking with colleagues and leaders in the field of family therapy from various parts of the globe.

The congress will focus on sharing findings, approaches to problems and ways of coping with them and helping to heal hurting families, couples, and children in various cultures, and fostering mental health and growth in challenging times. Communicating and networking among therapists both during their time in Buenos Aires and when they return to their homes and communities will be a significant part of the congress process. The congress will celebrate our ability through face-to-face contacts and contemporary technology and modes of communication to learn from others as we continue to develop awareness of how we live simultaneously in “one world” and many worlds, and especially how the development of family therapy is rapidly becoming a mutual back-and-forth process in which we can and o learn new ways from all parts of the world.

IFTA, working in a collaborative spirit with other professionals and organizations around the world who share its mission, also promotes continuing education for family therapy professionals in the development of international quality standards for marriage and family therapists in order that they may better assist families in the communities in which they serve.
The target audience does not include only medical professions, as it varies from social workers, teachers, counselors etc.

The structure of the congress is a participant driven congress. There are, brief sessions, longer sessions, parallel sessions, etc. all based on the abstracts submitted.
