Fiji Releases Video to Help Youth Overcome Mental Health Stigma
December 3rd, 2009

There are many ways that individuals and organizations can attempt to replace social stigmas and prejudice with accurate data and deep understanding. From talking with others in community outreach programs to creating meaningful literature on the subject, efforts to overcome the difficulties of mental health and treatment stigmas are many. Sometimes, though, projects incorporating multi-media elements aimed at reaching people through the mediums and social languages with which they’re most familiar are especially effective, and this is hoped to be the case for a new video released on Fiji television incorporating an original song about mental illness. A collaboration between singers, songwriters, mental health advocates, and national organizations, the video aims to address mental health and the importance of seeking care while driving home the idea that even talented, popular, strong, and successful people can experience mental health difficulties.

This seems like a nice idea to educate the newer generation that is anyway running away from printed material and getting more and more into multimedia and online material.
If these are the people that these kids are looking up to then I think that is a fabulous idea to have these celebrities and others that they can identify with advocate for better mental health understanding and awareness. Whereas kids will so often shut down when parents and other adults try to talk to them somehow they will always listen to what their famous idols have to say. I like this and wish that there were more people in the spotlight who would put more of their energy into helping make the world a better place and bring awareness and understanding to subjects that are so often misunderstood.
We must try and do whatever it takes to spread information regarding issues that people have not known much about… whatever the medium, as long as it is attractive to people, it must be used.
