Cost of Mental Health Neglect in Business Raises Awareness

Though many advocacy groups may attempt to influence public understanding and reception of mental health issues, direct influence and challenging consequences are often able to make the point with considerable power. This seems to be the case for modern business, as journalism institutions from Bloomberg to the Harvard Business Review have picked up on the alarming costs of untreated mental health issues and stigmas to a wide range of businesses and industries. The news that businesses are beleaguered by great costs for employees taking sick leave due to unaddressed mental health concerns, or the concerns of their children or other family members, may not be novel for those in the mental health professions, but increased public interest in these issues suggests that greater efforts will be made to mitigate business expenses with effective and accessible treatment.

These are costs that are hidden from the public eye because it is what the company has lost due to sick leave by its employees, and is not as visible as any expenditure or anything. The publication of such losses will hopefully raise a flag in the eyes of the employers and the public so that mental health care is not an ignored domain.

It is good news that awareness is spread in this regard because it is a win-win situation for both the employer and the employee.

For the employer, it gives them an opportunity to plug loopholes in the system and achieve greater efficiency. From the employees’ perspective, it is good because if the company does not suffer monetary losses, the employees stand to get more increments and bonuses.

Employee health, whether physical or mental, has a direct effect on the efficiency and productivity of the organization and this is exactly the reason why mental outlets are an integral part of work policies of most organizations.

Its a mutual thing…companies that take care of their employees are automatically rewarded with good efficiency and productivity… and when an organization goes all out to take good care of its employees, it will be a win-win situation for both the parties.

A small investment towards the betterment of workers can go a long way in reducing and preventing bigger losses to the company, and this is something every employer ought to know!
