Chocolate And Depression Are Connected, But How?
July 5th, 2010

Anecdotally, plenty of people will tell you that chocolate is a comfort food, especially if you’re feeling down. But why? Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine set out to discover the connection between chocolate and depression. Their results are interesting, but still don’t ultimately answer the question of mood-chocolate connection. The more depressive symptoms people exhibited, the more servings of chocolate they consumed in a month’s time, found the study, from five servings for people with no symptoms and twelve servings for those with high symptoms. Findings were the same among men and women, and researchers were able to eliminate fats, caffeine, carbohydrates, energy, and even anti-oxidants as the ‘goal’ of chocolate intake, as none of these increased among depressed people in any other food forms. So the question still remains: does chocolate ease depression, or cause it in the first place?
