Having a baby is a milestone occasion in many women’s lives. It is a time of profound role transition and development of reordering of priorities. For many women, motherhood brings joy, a sense of wonder, and tremendous fulfillment. And, for at least 20% of all child-bearing women, motherhood can bring about significant perinatal mood/anxiety concerns.
What is a perinatal mood/anxiety disorder (PMAD)? I would like to first underscore that in no way do I recommend labeling a woman as “disordered.” As a strengths-based therapist, I believe that empowering clients to work through challenges... Read More

A GoodTherapy.org News Summary
Is therapy the best treatment for depression? What about antidepressants? A combination of the two? How about supplemental or alternative therapies including yoga and meditation, or good old fashioned physical exercise? There is no single ‘best practice’ for therapists and counselors helping clients deal with depression. But of the treatment options mentioned here, antidepressants have been far more controversial than the rest, and for good reason. Any time we turn to chemicals in response to a physical or psychological struggle, we should make sure we are... Read More

A new report in the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine illustrates the value of mental and emotional serenity, even in times of physical pain. Patients undergoing a painful bone marrow procedure showed lower levels of pain if given a nature scene and matching soundtrack to focus on during the procedure. This study has positive implications for managing pain in other medical procedures, but it also tells us something about how our minds and bodies work. People who... Read More

The news media is filled with negative stories depicting despicable people who were put into powerful positions either by election (politicians) or by talent (sports/entertainment). Newspapers often read like cheap tabloids. We’re bombarded by images online of politicians who are bilking taxpayers of billions of dollars and sports/entertainment heroes whose lives are out-of-control. We are lured to click onto seductive headlines by wiggling bodies vying for our attention. Crime on the streets and in neighborhoods is rising at alarming rates. Promises of health care reform have not trickled down... Read More

If you have an adolescent, somewhere between 11 years old and 16, listen up!
Our children are amazing and smart and funny and rude and mean and delightful and deceptive and disrespectful and loving and caring and selfish…what I mean to say is that they are full of contradictions. One moment they are fine and cooperative, then the next they are angry and hurtful and they may even hate us. Are you with me? Excellent, I see some of you nodding and smiling. Stay with me for a few minutes, I have a strategy to share with you I think you’ll find helpful. Read More

A GoodTherapy.org News Summary
The over-prescription of antidepressants and other medications in situations where psychotherapy should be a first recourse (and may very well be all the treatment needed) is increasingly common. A new report finds that in many cases, clinicians are going a step further. Many are prescribing antidepressants in very specific instances when their use is explicitly not recommended by widely accepted guidelines. Specifically, people diagnosed... Read More

“It feels heavy right here,” Rebecca* said, crying and touching her chest, “like a huge rock is sitting on me. It’s like that old cartoon, where a boulder would fall off a cliff and pin the roadrunner to the ground – it feels like I can’t move.” Rebecca had come to see me last year, a 32 year-old successful marketing professional, whose older sister had recently been diagnosed with a psychotic condition. She seemed lost in grief. Fluctuating bewilderment, sadness, fear, anger, tenderness, and love were tying knots in every part of her.
I thought that untying some of the knots in... Read More

A GoodTherapy.org News Update
Many therapists take great pains to make their clients feel comfortable during sessions at their private practice. From conscientious furniture selections --including the ever-classical couch-- to calming hues and interesting artistic focal points, the mental health professional's office has long been the subject of concerted effort and study. Yet a new trend among psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers alike has taken the concept of making clients comfortable to a... Read More
