My son who is 4 months old is eating pureed foods now. He is eating and liking his fruit and vegetables. I am happy about that. I know that is all he knows at this point but as he grows up, it will be more of a challenge to have him eat his fruits and vegetables and I and my husband will be responsible for that. WOW! What a challenge but maybe with planning it can be smooth. How?
At a doctor’s office, I saw a clip about healthy snacking for children. I have read information with exercise... Read More

Teens with eating and food issues, such as binge eating and anorexia, may be at higher risk of carrying these behaviors into adulthood, according to a new study. “The findings from the current study argue for early and ongoing efforts aimed at the prevention, early identification, and treatment of disordered eating behaviors in young people,” said Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, Ph.D., MPH, RD, professor... One of the cornerstones of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is the concept of workability. The aim of ACT is for our clients to create a rich, meaningful, and vibrant life. Workability is how we determine whether a client’s behaviors are serving that end. Usually, people know when their behaviors are not working for them, but because they are often fused with their thoughts, they may have a hard time acting any other way. Instead of bringing them closer to the life they want, their behaviors are more or less a means of struggling with or avoiding painful thoughts and feelings. To demonstrate... Read More

The Pleasure Principle is simply this: Our bodies are wired to move towards pleasure and avoid pain. We naturally gravitate towards things that taste, smell and feel yummy and delicious. We naturally avoid the opposite. To try to fight the pleasure principle, as so many diets encourage us to do, is to fight one of our most basic instincts. Is it any wonder then that so many diets fail?
What if following and listening to our pleasure was really the secret to it all?... Read More

She hates her thighs, the sight of them drive her mad. The tissue is soft, the weakness mocks her. Yet she is somehow pulled into the ritual of gazing and when not in front of a reflection, imagining the horror of her flesh. She is repulsed by its frailty, yet it eludes her, defies her, mocks her then, paradoxically, defines her. It continues despite her efforts to be rid of it. At first she is awash with hopelessness at this self-reflected failure. Reactively, almost immediately,... Read More

Nearly one out of every ten pregnant women will experience postpartum depression, or have depressive symptoms during their pregnancy. But there is very little research to explain why. However, a new study hopes to identify some of the causes of postpartum depression and isolate warning signs in order to help these women receive earlier treatment and interventions. Samantha Meltzer-Brody,... Read More

According to a Harvard study, over half of the people who undergo surgery for obesity have pre-existing food and eating issues, including binging. In a recent article, Lisa Lilenfeld, president of the Eating Disorders Coalition at Argosy University in Washington, D.C., and a practicing psychologist, says that this segment of the population is at the highest risk for developing additional food... Last week, I had the privilege of presenting a web conference on disordered eating for Good Therapy. In the course of the web conference, I was asked a question about orthorexia. Thinking about what to write for this month’s article, this Q&A exchange about orthorexia popped into my head. I realized I’d not done more than mention it in passing in my Good Therapy articles, and thought I’d take... Read More

When you hear someone has experienced a trauma, your initial thought is they were involved in some catastrophic event. Rarely does the image of an everyday problem or situation enter your mind; in most cases the later doesn’t even make it on your radar. The smaller traumatic events, which have been labeled by some as small “t” traumas, are just as important to consider when it comes to working with people with a mental health issue (C. Patterson-Sterling, personal... Read More

Researchers at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s (SLaM) OCD Service in collaboration with the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) have discovered an increase in the development of eating disorders in children who were previously diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A new study found that nearly one in ten children who had OCD later went on to develop an eating disorder, a higher statistic than is found in those without OCD. Dr. Nadia... Read More

Leptin is a hormone that tells the brain when a person is full and has eaten enough. It is present in everyone and is derived from fat cells in our bodies. However, a new study suggests that a decrease in leptin may be linked to depression. "Animal data suggest that leptin may reduce anxiety and improve depression. Our study in women suggests that leptin may indeed have antidepressant qualities," said the study's lead author, Elizabeth Lawson,... Read More

After 6 years in the depths of anorexia, my eating disorder was a way of life. Starving had become my world. It was the way I dealt with anger, fear, hurt, frustration, disappointment, and every other even slightly uncomfortable feeling. I managed my weight to manage my life. Anorexia was my control, my way of communicating, and my way of avoiding, and it was the one thing I felt like I did really well. I was awesome at losing weight.
Of course, I lost a... Read More

May is Mental Health Month, and while mental health concerns impact everyone, women face distinct challenges. Women possess unique biochemical and hormonal influences that predispose them to certain mental illnesses, and they respond differently to environmental stresses. Not surprisingly, women benefit from a gender-sensitive approach to prevention and treatment.
In comparison to men, women are two to three times as likely to experience anxiety, twice as likely to become depressed, and they develop post-traumatic stress disorder twice as often. Ninety percent of eating disorders, such as anorexia... Read More
