The new health care bill will expand the number of children who have access to counseling, therapy, and mental and behavioral health care, including treatment for ADHD. But a new report suggests that Medicaid-funded ADHD treatment, though more accessible, has not been remarkably effective. According to the report, the majority of children treated are prescribed stimulants by a doctor, and they see that doctor no more than twice a year. This means that these children did not have their medications... Read More

There are many different opinions about whether psychotherapy, antidepressants, or a combination of the two is the most appropriate response to depression. As with most debated topics, there’s no single answer that applies to all people. But we do know that medication without therapy is generally the least effective: most people respond best to either therapy alone or therapy in partnership with antidepressants, at least for awhile. Repeated studies have shown the combined approach to be preferable for most patients.
Both psychotherapy and medications have... Read More

Despite criticism of drug problems in the U.S., new statistics show that non-adherence to prescriptions is a larger problem than we’d thought. Regardless of your stance on therapy vs. medication for depression, ADHD, and other psychologically-related conditions, it’s widely-recognized that inconsistent adherence to a prescription is risky. And for the millions of Americans on medication for physical health conditions, that risk isn’t even controversial. In some cases, people lack follow-through... Read More

ADHD continues to be a hotly contested diagnosis, due in no small part to the steep rise in diagnosis rates over the past several years. In 2003, 7.8% of 4-17 year olds were diagnosed with the condition; by 2007, it was 9.7%. Those percentage points represent a 21.8% rise in just four years. Much of the debate around ADHD centers on what treatment is appropriate for kids: drugs, therapy, alternative treatments, or all of the above? That debate is perhaps inevitable, as there’s still no clear cause of ADHD. Perhaps it’s a... Read More

A recent article in the Friday Journal section of the Wall Street Journal, dated November 5, 2010 states that preschoolers, aged 2 to 5, spend an average of more than 32 hours in front of the TV screen each week, according to Nielsen. To add to this horrific statistic a large percentage of preschoolers watch TV from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Two different views of television programming seem to have emerged for young children—curriculum vs. storytelling. External pressures stemming from “no child left behind” and societal conformity has created a plethora of PBS shows and other children programming... Read More

Having a loved one overseas in a combat area is likely to trigger anxiety, worry, and stress in anyone, and it’s not uncommon for people to seek counseling as they deal with being the one left at home. Children of service members are not immune to such strain. A new report in the journal Pediatrics shows that doctors’ visits for mental and behavioral health issues increase 11% when a parent is deployed, with visits occurring most often for stress, anxiety, and attention-deficit concerns. Kids may seem resilient, able to ‘bounce... Read More

A GoodTherapy.org News Summary
Last week, we passed along several connections between trauma experienced in childhood (such physical abuse, sexual abuse, violence, and natural disaster) and mental health issues later on in life. However, there are plenty of more subtle childhood experiences and traits that have also been linked with adult behavioral and emotional difficulty. For example, mental health research from Concordia University suggests a link between stress during adolescence and mood issues,... Read More

Roughly one in five teens experiences a psychological health issue serious enough to disrupt their daily life, according to a new survey by the National Institute of Mental Health. Emotional needs such as depression or bipolar were top, with eleven percent of teens. Ten percent struggle with ADHD or other behavioral issues. And eight percent of teens surveyed reported struggling with anxiety on a regular basis. Chalking problems up to hormones does not solve them, but instead... Read More

A new study has used brain monitoring to show that through training and therapy, we can strengthen our ability to control our own impulses. Many people who pursue therapy and counseling for addiction, attention issues (e.g. ADHD), and eating disorders (especially binge eating) struggle to fight impulses, even when they know those impulses do not represent behaviors that they want for their lives. The new study shows that “mind over matter” is not just a cliché.... Read More

Standing in line a few weeks ago at my local Whole Foods market, Time magazine caught my eye. Its cover had an idyllic full page picture of a young boy skipping stones on a pond with the headline “THE CASE AGAINST SUMMER VACATION”. I caught my breath and groaned shaking my head in dismay. The sub title read our children are falling behind and loose even more after summer break.
I have since read the article. Some of the concern is directed to lower income children who as the article states are often 3 grade levels behind their more affluent peers. I certainly agree that more enrichment... Read More

A GoodTherapy.org News Summary
Studies measuring the symptoms of children diagnosed with ADHD both before and after being put on medication may be able to measure how effective the medication is at altering those symptoms. But such studies don’t show the whole picture; parents have mixed reactions about putting their children on medication, even if the medication is helpful. Consumer Reports recently surveyed over 900 parents of children with ADHD about the effectiveness of, and their satisfaction with, a number... Read More

Instant communication and an increased tendency to multitask are hallmarks of today’s technology-immersed lifestyles. But study after study shows that attention spans are shortening, and people have problems focusing on single tasks. New research on people who practice Buddhist meditation suggests that the practice can improve both focus and attention. Future research is planned to determine whether meditation also helps people regulate emotions. This type of calm and clarity, and the mental... Read More

In studies of both teens and adults, there is plenty of data showing that a person’s level of impulsivity corresponds, quite frequently, with their alcohol intake. In particular, high levels of impulsivity (and low levels of impulse control) are very common traits for people struggling with alcohol addiction. But new research from the University of Missouri-Columbia shows that impulsivity isn’t a static trait that people simply have or don’t have. In most young adults, impulsivity tends to decline between the ages of 18... Read More
