As the New Year begins, we think about resolutions. Though couples may have resolved to have a better relationship, resolve their differences, have less conflict, it occurred to us that we don’t really “resolve” issues in relationships.
“Resolving” connotes the process of solving a problem or difficulty, finding an answer, making a decision, bringing a disagreement to an end. Though we certainly do solve problems, make decisions and conclude conflicts with our partners, we never fully finish. Most couples have chronic issues that they continue to dialogue about during the lifetime... Read More

Over the past several years, and especially in the past six months, schools nationwide have moved to fight bullying in their hallways and classrooms. Study after study shows that being victimized by a bully can be psychologically devastating. Bullying victims can develop long term anxiety, depression, low self esteem, and social avoidance that escalate during adolescence and become lifelong struggles in adulthood. Therapy and counseling are important interventions, but it’s important that they be implemented early; the longer bullying goes on unreported, the... Read More

This isn’t the first article on debates about the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), and it won’t be the last. The DSM is the guidebook that is used by therapists and counselors to diagnose their patients’ mental health status. The guidebook, which is revised every few years, features detailed symptoms and criteria that funnel individuals from broad diagnoses... Read More

This is the first entry in a series of blog articles about a men’s therapy group, which I conduct on a weekly basis. This men’s group was established a little over a year ago, and consists of 8 members. The group is an excellent example of men’s issues in contemporary America – their roles as men in a complicated world, their relationships, and their emotional and psychological struggles. As a psychotherapist who has worked with men in various settings for over 30 years, I am continuously impressed and deeply touched by these men – their honesty in dealing with difficult life problems,... A GoodTherapy.org News Summary
On the whole, people assume that those around them lead happier lives than they themselves do. Dartmouth psychology fellow Alex Jordan noticed that his friends, when logging onto Facebook, became depressed about their own lives. Everyone else seemed to be happier, more successful, and more active. Jordan began to explore and research the differences between how we perceive others’ quality of life and how life actually feels to them. Time and time again, people rated others’ lives as higher... Cancer. HIV. Diabetes. Heart Disease. Just a few of the words no one wants to hear from their doctor. You may have had nagging symptoms for months and come prepared for difficult news. Or you may feel just fine, with no idea that your lab results or physical examination may show worrisome results. Either way, being on the receiving end of a serious medical diagnosis brings a myriad of feelings and concerns.
What does this mean?
What treatment is recommended?
Can I talk... Read More

People struggling with serious mental illness face numerous hurdles, many resulting directly from their mental health needs. Not least among these hurdles is a life expectancy that can be decades shorter than that of the general public; then there are the social and economic burdens. One clinic in Chicago is reaching out by providing primary health care specifically for people with severe mental illness. Their patients come in need of a wide... Read More

Undergoing therapy to address depression may make a weight loss program more effective, and conversely, weight loss may make depression treatment more effective as well. This insight comes from a new report published by University of Washington, Seattle researchers in General Hospital Psychiatry. The group monitored over 200 women with obesity for a full year. Half of the women went through a weight loss program, and the other half went through a combined program of weight loss and clinical treatment of depression. By the treatment’s halfway point (6 months),... Read More

Researchers from the University of Michigan recommend that pregnant women experiencing symptoms of depression find a therapist to address their blues. Their research finds that depression in the mother can influence the baby’s development. In utero exposure to “the cocktail of hormones cascading through depressed mothers’ bodies” results in decreased muscle tone and differences in neurological development. It’s not been proven that these differences are entirely bad, but it’s safe to say that... Read More

One factor preventing kids with mental health concerns from seeing a therapist or counselor is not that their parents don’t notice something’s wrong, but that they are hesitant to ask for help. This is according to a recently-published study from the University of Nottingham. Many parents who noticed that their children were struggling emotionally were hesitant to ask for help: some feared it would reflect poorly on their parenting skills, some dreaded the stigma that may come with a diagnostic label,... The new health care bill will expand the number of children who have access to counseling, therapy, and mental and behavioral health care, including treatment for ADHD. But a new report suggests that Medicaid-funded ADHD treatment, though more accessible, has not been remarkably effective. According to the report, the majority of children treated are prescribed stimulants by a doctor, and they see that doctor no more than twice a year. This means that these children did not have their medications... Read More

A good place to begin a discussion of Relational Psychology might well be with the all too familiar experience of the “awkward silence”. At some point in the therapeutic process a moment occurs that seems out of context. A Kleenex box is dropped. An offhand comment gets drowned out by the wail of an ambulance siren. The squeaky chair makes another embarrassing sound. It is during such everyday gaffes as these that the two people in a room are reminded of their shared humanity. Nothing too dramatic has occurred yet, in this moment of meeting, the roles between that of helper and client may appear... Read More

Recently, the use of virtual technologies within the context of therapy, psychotherapy, and counseling has become quite the hot topic. The New York Times reported on two ways that virtual technologies have been incorporated into therapeutic practice and referral. First, incoming patients interacted with an avatar to share their feelings, concerns, and fears—and ended up being more honest and open with avatars than with actual people. Secondly, some therapists are helping... Read More

Therapists and counselors are people too. Just because they’re trained to recognize and help people through depression, anxiety, and other concerns doesn’t mean they are immune to these struggles in their own lives. A new survey of mental health professionals found that 41.6% reported experiencing depression at some point in their life, and one in five (20.3%) were currently experiencing mild or moderate depression. About one in eight experienced emotional exhaustion and 2% had attempted suicide. It’s important to recognize... Read More
