Air Force Suicide Prevention Program Shows Promise
May 26th, 2010

While suicides within the military and among veterans have been the subjects of heated debate in recent months, an analysis of the Air Force’s suicide prevention program by researchers at the University of Rochester has found that since the program’s inception in the 1990′s, suicide rates have significantly dropped, save for a single spike in 1994 that has been unaccounted for. The Air Force has noted that while it is not possible to infer that the program specifically reduced suicide rates on its own, the study creates strong evidence for the program’s promising impact on psychological stigmas in the military branch.

Well there can be no doubt that the suicide rates will definitely be lower while under such a program when compared to there being no such program. These kind of programs are doing very well for our armed forces and need to be appreciated and it should be seen to it that they are constantly being evolved to suit the modern-day problems and issues that plague our armed forces.
As a former member of the military it makes me smile to know that finally this issue is being addressed at least by one branch of the armed services and that it appears that improvements are being made. I lost a few buddies of mine in the service to suicide- it just sucked the life out of them. There are some people who are not cut out to serve and deal with the pressures that are inherent to life in the military but I hated how back then it all was just swept under the rug, tried to make look as clean as possible. I guess there is no rug sweeping anymore but that is a good thing. It is awfully hard for a family to deal with the issue when the higher ups just want to pretend that it never happened.
maybe this program can be replicated by the army? because I read about how the army veterans are suffering and how many of them are even turning to suicide especially due to the ongoing wars in two different countries that our army is involved in…
