Study Examines Acupuncture Options for Depressed Pregnant Women
February 24th, 2010
The effects of depression on women during pregnancy, as well as potential issues linked to developing children, have been creating a recent need for innovation in terms of treatment, and a study just completed at Stanford University has shed some light on a potential option. Acupuncture, a staple of traditional Chinese medicine, can be specifically geared towards depression, and was administered to pregnant women with associated symptoms, while a control group received non-specific acupuncture or massage therapy. Results were promising if lacking definitive proof of efficacy, suggesting that adding acupuncture to psychotherapy treatment may have a positive impact.

I tried accupuncture for a hurt back a couple of years ago and had great success. With that being said I really do think that you have to keep an open mind when it comes to alternative therapies like this because if you do not keep the mind open then nothing is going to help you. So much of it is a mental thing, believing that what you are doing is good for you, but I hope that treatment trends like this one will continue to expand because it feels so much better to know that you are doing something good for the psyche and the body instead of always just ingesting a pill to try to make the pain go away.
I am suprised to hear this, honestly. This is because acupuncture is a physical technique, and this may not quite suit a pregnant woman,IMHO…More research needs to be done to make sure there is no physical harm,as some of these ‘points’ in acupuncture may actually interfere or harm the unborn baby.
Meds are usually not recommended for pregnant women for fear of any damage to their health or that of the baby…this new alternative method seems perfect because more often than not, there is a sense of doubt while opting for alternatiove treatment methods. But with acupuncture, there would be no such jitters as it is a tried and tested methodology.
