Biofeedback / Neurofeedback

Biofeedback encourages clients to use their own body’s responses and indicators to facilitate improved health. Many health professionals use this technique with the aid of biofeedback machines or monitors. This method of self-healing and actualization has been used for centuries. Taking your own temperature is one form of Biofeedback. Ultimately, the goal of biofeedback is to take the information gathered from your body’s physical responses to stimuli or events, and use it to examine the emotional implications to transform the body itself. This type of therapy was developed by Neal Miller, Leo DiCara, Elmer Green and Barbara Brown.

Using Biofeedback for Anxiety

When a person is able to gain insight into their own body’s mechanisms, they are better able to control their muscles and other physical reactions. Many people who practice Biofeedback are able to regulate their own heart rate and blood pressure, simply by listening to their body. This technique has been used in treating various mental health challenges, including impulse control and anxiety.

Physical Therapy and Biofeedback

iofeedback is often used by physical therapists to help stroke victims redevelop muscle function. Psychologists implement Biofeedback in order to relax and calm a nervous or tense client and to help identify stress reactions and explore alternative physical behaviors with the client. Biofeedback serves as a useful form of pain management therapy and enables clients who were previously unable to control their pain, to be able to function at a much higher level.

Positive Results of Biofeedback

Biofeedback has been shown to provide positive results in the relief of stress-related symptoms. Further research is being conducted to determine if this effective therapy will provide the same benefits for various other conditions. Some believe that with enough advancement and understanding of this remarkable therapy that it will eventually give people the ability to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other related health circumstances. Biofeedback can be used on clients of all ages and in every stage of health. Even people who show no visible symptoms can benefit from the understanding they gain relating to their body’s functionality.
