My Approach to Helping
I believe clients are the best authority on their own lives, and it is through this authority that we will work. I also believe that clients have many strengths that they may be unaware of. Together, we will uncover and emphasize these strengths to help you meet your goals. I will partner with you to use clinically proven and straightforward methods, many of which I can teach you to practice at home. I believe in using a holistic approach. Although it has originated as an Eastern way of thinking, there is a growing body of research indicative of the mind-body connection. Together, we will look at your exercise habits, nutrition, and stress management techniques. We will also look at your external environment- your family, spirituality, and support network. By looking at these areas and strengthening them, we can increase your ability to cope. I believe my scientific corporate background gives me a unique edge as a counselor. When clients come in with mental health issues related to their job I can truly say that I have "been there." I understand first-hand the stresses and anxieties of a full-time corporate career. And, thanks to my education at the University of South Florida and subsequent counseling experience, I can say that I also understand the mental health issues. It is the combination of these experiences that makes me stand out among other counselors.
More Info About My Practice
My office is located in a small, private bungalow in the Seminole Heights area. Your first session will be complimentary, so that you can learn more about the process of therapy and see if your are comfortable working with me. It is important that you feel comfortable with your therapist. For more information, including a short video of the office location, please visit counselorbarb.com. In addition to treating depression and anxiety, I have two specialties: grief and marital counseling. Under the supervision and guidance of Sheryle Baker, who studied under Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and has over 25 years of grief and traumatic loss experience, I have helped many people at The Life Center through their grieving process. My experience in addictions counseling has helped me to be effective in counseling couples at The Salvation Army, where one partner is in recovery. I believe that for married people much of their individual happiness and satisfaction is dependent on the state of their relationship. In addition, research shows that a happy marriage means physically healthier partners.
