My Approach to Helping

Together we select the most suitable therapy approach to fit with you. Whether it is couples therapy, family therapy or your personal therapy, I ensure that the type of counselling matches your learning style. Many couples benefit from a type of therapy called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. It is a structured approach to couples therapy that de-escalates negative interactions and establishes new patterns that promote secure emotional attachments in adult relationships. It is the most successful approach to creating loving relationships and endorsed by the American Psychological Association as scientifically proven method. It has achieved a 75% success rate and 86% of couples report feeling happier in their relationships. Many people benefit from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which helps you to identify and change your thinking and belief patterns so as to improve your mood. When no longer overwhelmed with emotion, it is easier for you to take action and achieve your goals. Cognitive Behavour Therapy is the most scientifically researched and effective personal therapy. Many families with teens benefit from my extensive knowledge of the psychological development of teenagers and Systemic and Experiential Family Therapy. This is a structured approach to family therapy which de-escalates negative interactional patterns and establishes positive emotionally secure connections within the family. This combination is effective in creating more respectful relationships between all family members and guiding teens into adulthood. Because I have over 25 years of training a wide variety of couples, family and personal therapy and counselling approaches and experience of what works best, I can ensure a good match for you. Research on successful outcomes in counselling and therapy indicate that just as important as the therapy approach is the match of style and personalities of client and therapist. Clients have reported that as a therapist, I am very approachable and empathic. For example, comments from counselling clients have included the following: "A very sensitive and caring person", "Someone who always made me feel good about myself, "Really helpful in clarifying issues, Soft-spoken and empathic without being patronizing. I immediately felt comfortable in his office - neither judged or rushed. I felt really listened to and that my concerns were real. "He is insightful and patient; very skilled at helping us both to become aware of how we were communicating with each other. Allan provided great ideas, practical suggestions.

  • My areas of focus are couples counselling, parent and teen and family counselling. Therapy Office Locations: Newmarket: 17 Main St. Toronto: 118 Eglinton Av. West. Suite 210 Marriage Counselling and Couples Therapy - I offer marriage counselling to couples who are in a state of crisis like after the discovery of an extra-marital affair or when the passion is in short supply and you feel like you have drifted apart. Many couples come for marriage counselling in a crisis or as a last resort. However, it is a good idea to come to couples counselling when problems are less entrenched and before one person has already given up or left. This makes it easy to repair and strengthen the relationship. I provide couples therapy to people who are linked romantically ï¾ married, living together, engaged, or temporarily separated and interested in reconciling. Family Counselling for Parents and Their Teenagers I offer family counselling when families are in a state of crisis like after the discovery of drugs in your teens room, a hospitalization or when the level of disrespect from your teen seems unbearable. Many families come to family counselling in a crisis or when parents are at the end of their rope. It is a good idea to come to counselling when problems are less entrenched and before you have kicked your teen out of home. Parent Counselling and Therapy for Parents of Teens Sometimes I offer counselling to parents only (the child or teen does not attend). This can occur because of the unwillingness of the teen to attend family counselling or because they are not needed to address issues. Sometimes parental counselling reveals marital problems which can then be addresses in marriage counselling. Personal Counselling and Therapy I offer personal counselling to people who are in need of support and ideas about how to deal with present or past relationships, or manage their moods: anger, anxiety, panic or depression. Sometimes this may come after marriage or family therapy with me or may be requested at the outset.
