My Approach to Helping

You've probably already tried very hard to figure out how to feel better. You may be discouraged, overwhelmed or even hopeless that change can happen. Perhaps you've been told too many times that you're "just overreacting" or you're "too sensitive." (Maybe you've wished to erase your emotions altogether!)

Let me help you learn to value, listen to and respect your sensitivity. I offer a collaborative, encouraging approach with guidance in how emotions and behaviors work and in how to create lasting change. One of my life's greatest joys is helping people reduce their suffering.

I specialize in clients who feel overwhelmed by their emotions, and who have a hard time regulating (calming down) strong emotion. Many of my clients struggle with self-harm behaviors. I also very much enjoy working with people who struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and women who struggle with guilt.

I take a holistic approach (e.g., I don't ignore physiology) to helping clients. I am firmly grounded in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a comprehensive treatment aimed at helping individuals build a life that's worth living. Together we can take the first step toward hope. Call today for a free consultation.

Dr. Caldwell-Andrews is experienced in Dialectical Behavior Therapy as well as in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and a number of empirically supported treatments such as those for OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), Anxiety and Panic Disorder and Depression. She is a strong believer in holistic treatment and views the mind and body as inextricably connected. Her overall approach is primarily behavioral, as she feels that is the most compassionate viewpoint to have. That is to say, the way to change behavior is through behavior and not through punitive, self-recriminating methods (those things you probably learned a long time ago and use over and over again even though they are pretty ineffective). Dr. Caldwell-Andrews views thoughts, feelings, neural impulses -- everything --- as behavior. She believes strongly in the inherent goodness of human nature and is an incorrigible optimist. With a real appreciation of the courage it takes to come to therapy, Dr. Caldwell-Andrews has two simultaneous areas of overall focus in her psychotherapy work: acceptance and change.
