Relational Recovery

Developed by Terry Real, Relational Recovery aims to provide each sex the confidence and ability to break the traditional roles that have been forced upon them in order to achieve more harmonious relationships. Society and culture have created an anti-relational environment that strips the authenticity from men and women beginning in childhood. Oftentimes women are pressured to assume the roles portrayed in society and sacrifice their true inner self as a result. Men who are aggressive and defensive are idolized in our cultural mainstream. These masks are often assumed early on by men and women and each wears several as they enter into a relationship as partners.

Gender Role Myths

At the heart of harmony is balance and equality. In Relational Recovery, the goal is to achieve this sense of balance in an unbalanced microcosm. Men are perceived to be the dominant figures in relationships. And when they are not, they are perceived to be weak. Similarly, women who do not meet the expectations of society and sociological pressures also experience criticism, blame, and guilt. Relational Recovery dispels the social myths that pervade modern relationships. It celebrates the true nature of each partner and the role that partner plays in the couple dynamic. It allows for freedom of expression without fear of blame, anger, or retaliation. There is no condemnation on the path to oneness.

Empowerment through Relational Recovery

Relational Recovery encourages women to reclaim their assertiveness and arms both men and women with the skills necessary to achieve intimacy, passion, and unity through practical application. Relational recovery strives to change the heart and direction of relationship therapy and male trained clinicians in order to achieve a more effective method of treatment. This technique aims to empower educators, parents, and communities to bring up strong, independent, and whole boys and girls. The core of Relational Recovery rests on the attainment of an ecologically productive, healthy environment in which relationships are not male dominated, but rather are recognized and valued for their sense of balance and respect for both parties equally.
