Psychomotor therapy combines emotional, physical, cognitive, and symbolic responses and reactions in the body. It views a person holistically as being one in mind and body. Developed by Diane and Albert Pesso, relies on the individual’s own abilities to interact positively in the social and cultural environment. Unlike physical movements alone, Psychomotor involves an action without a cognitive or physiological intent. The purpose of the action is not to achieve a desired physical outcome. Rather, the motion or movement is a direct result of an internal process of perception and management of emotions and experiences.
Pesso Boyden Systems Psychomotor (PBSP)
Pesso Boyden Systems Psychomotor (PBSP) promotes the revelation of a person’s true being through psychospiritual techniques employing body, mind, and energy. By circumventing the mind, a therapist targets the body’s sensory perception to discover and cleanse memories buried deep within. This is what makes this form of therapy unique from other bodywork therapies. The movements are not intentional and are not directed. Each movement is merely a sensory response. However, these responses provide valuable information into the inner processing functions of a person.
The objectives of PBSP are multi-faceted and encompass achieving an overall state of ease with relation to interpretive motion, physical movements, and functionality and reflexive actions. The traditional approach for the attainment of these objectives addresses the motor skills expression of concepts or the internal interpretation system.
A client is instructed to give names and voices to memories and emotional responses to the memories and is encouraged to create new, more productive and positive memories that promote the healing process. The pattern of negative response that is ingrained in one's persona is what creates the present stressful or negative situations. By reforming these memories and the responses to them, people can achieve a healthier mind-body interaction and use the positive forces of their own energy to elicit healing methods of addressing life’s issues as they arise.
